BACK TO THE ARTIST   Music in the Tuileries Gardens, 1862           Details     Description     Artist Manet, Édouard The gardens of the Tuileries Palace (burned down during the Commune if 1871) were opened to the public by Napoleon III and soon became a popular meeting place. This lovely portrait of Second Empire society (many of the figures are thought to have been based on photographs) is an example of3„4Manet’s concerns with contemporary life. The artist himself can be seen standing in a dandyish pose on the extreme left; among the crowd are Baudelaire, Offenbach, Zacharie, Astruc, Theophile Gautier and Fantin-Latour.     Date 1862   Institution National Gallery, London     Medium Oil on canvas   Dimensions 76.2 x 118.1 cm
